The Not So Clear History of the Breakfast Taco

The year is 2016, and the unthinkable has happened. War is declared! The reason for this war? breakfast tacos. Matthew Sedacca wrote an article on the history of this morning delicacy and had claimed that the city of Austin, Texas was the originator for the term. This article, in turn, upset the citizens of San Antonio and then ensured the great war. Now it didn’t last very long, and in truth, there were no real winners or losers, but needless to say, this breakfast dish has been a staple for many and is going nowhere anytime soon.

Now there is no official date that we know of for when the taco originated. It is thought that the dish has been dated back to the early 1500s. Throughout history, this dish has been filled with various ingredients, ranging from fish and other sorts of meats to insects and snails. Even now, the taco continues to change with vegan options that include mushrooms, cactus, and beans, but few variations come close to superiority than the fan-favorite breakfast variation.

Somewhat of a taboo topic, that at times debated, is the name for this delicacy. For most, there is a distinction between a breakfast burrito and taco. The name may seem to be interchangeable, but for some, it is insulting to use these two terms interchangeably. A burrito is rolled up, and a taco is folded, and I can’t think of an instance that hasn’t been the case, at least for myself. In areas such as San Antonio, there is a very clear distinction between the two, and although they may not treat you any differently deep down, it cuts like a knife. Ultimately though, they’ll point you in the direction for the best breakfast tacos they know because they are meant to unify us and give us that inner peace or that feel-good feeling we get when we eat this delicious morsel.

You may ask yourself, “Well, who won The Great Breakfast Taco War?” The answer honestly would be no one. This delicacy was never meant to divide us, but to bring us together, and the best part is that it can be customized to what tastes delicious for us individually. There are so many variations and styles of making this breakfast dish that it would be near impossible to claim that you had found the “correct” way to create one. The next time you find yourself looking for something new, quick, easy, or just plain delicious for the most important meal of the day, look no further than the breakfast taco.
